From the beginning of the 20th century a new rationality began in furniture design, stimulated by the new movements such as Bauhaus and ‘De Stijl’. European furniture companies became very creative producing minimalist furniture for home and office made out of metal.
This 1953 bookcase is very symbolic for the 1950ies, reflecting a new era of consumer prosperity and modernism in the Netherlands. Good condition, usermarks consistent with age. If desired the metal cabinet ( 1 available ) comes with or without the unit. Quite affordable shipping possible when taken apart.
Dutch designer Martin Visser commissioned Friso Kramer to create this metal book case for the ‘Bijenkorf’ departments store.
Visser had clear ideas about the principles of good furniture design. Visser began his career working as a decorator for ‘De Bijenkorf’ before he became designer at the Spectrum furniture company.
Kramer became famous for his many designs for Dutch company Ahrend / De Cirkel, which manufacturered steel furniture for schools and office buildings. Today, his work is probably one of the most appreciated of its kind, and particulary the pieces developed during the fifties have become sought-after collector items which are purchased from all over the world. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in the ‘Boijmans van Beuningen Museum’ Rotterdam and in the ‘Stedelijk Museum’ in Amsterdam.
