From the late 1940ies until early 1980ies, famous industrial designer Friso Kramer ( 1922 ) worked as an industrial designer at Dutch company Ahrend / De Cirkel, which manufacturered steel furniture for schools and office buildings. For most schools and companies it was prohibited to sell or keep furniture which was written off after several years of intensive use, which means most of these chairs have been destroyed already at the time.
Today, his work is probably one of the most appreciated of its kind, and particulary the pieces developed during the fifties have already become true collector items which are wanted all over the world. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in the ‘Boijmans van Beuningen Museum’ Rotterdam and in the ‘Stedelijk Museum’ in Amsterdam.
