Ilmari Tapiovaara is revered as a master of characteristic wood related interiors who captured the essence of Finnish identity and created a range of beautiful furniture during the 40ies and 50ies.
In 1955, these characteristic two-tone timber coffee table was designed. Angular shaped wood structure; the top is formed from three pieces of solid dark stained pine woodwood with the typical ‘split top’. The appearance of these skandinavian furniture references strongly to traditional country furniture.

Very charming and warm piece in a used but solid condition ( see pictures ) can be used right away. Burnt manufacturers stamp on the bottom. This table is also documented in the ‘Goed Wonen’ catalogue of 1960.

 

 

 

Late 1930ies Tapiovaara graduated as interior architect from the department of furniture design in Helsinki. He worked as designer at furniture company Asko ( Finland ), and during World War II, Tapiovaara designed field furniture for the Finnish army; only wood could be used because no nails or screws were available at the time. After the war Tapiovaara and his wife designed furniture for Domus Academica in Helsinki and designed the famous Domus chair. Tapiovaara also designed interiors for several companies starting in the early post-war days.
