Large black and white lowboard with sliding doors by Martin Visser, on chrome metal base, model KW 85 in the Spectrum catalogue. For several decades Dutch designer and modern art collector Visser determined the look of the Spectrum furniture collection. Visser began his career working as a decorator for Dutch department store ‘De Bijenkorf’ before he became designer at the Spectrum furniture company in the early 1950ies. Being influenced by ( pre war ) functionalism, Visser had clear ideas about the principles of good furniture design; the carefully balanced proportion and absence of decoration clearly comes together in this hard to find KW 85 sideboard, dated 1966.
Together with other Dutch modernist furniture companies such as Gispen, Artifort and Pastoe, Spectrum communicate the principles of good design to a broader public during the fifties and sixties of the 20th century.
