The forward-thinking designs of Cees Braakman (1917-1995) paved the way for success for Pastoe from the early fifties. In the beginning of his career Braakman went to the US to study design and production processes. Clearly inspired by designs of Eames and Knoll, Braakman and Pastoe introduced the bent plywood techniques into their first line of modern furniture. Cees Braakman was one of the most influentual designers of the Netherlands after the second world war.
Like most Pastoe designs this highboard is characterized by its lack of roundings; all lines are angular and there are hardly any decorative elements. The use of teak timber and the “floating” appearance of the body are hallmarks of the midcentury modern style.
Hard to find these days, especially in this condition; no watermarks or discoloration, really great condition.
