After the second world war, French designer Mathieu Matégot ( 1910 – 2001 ) set up a workshop for handcrafted furniture in Paris for designing furniture and household articles. He used quite innovative materials such as perforated metal and rattan to create his light weight, sculptural designs. Matégot ended his career as a furniture designer quite early ( 1959 ) and devoted himself to the design of tapestry.
Today some of his influential furniture designs are part of the collection at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris and the design collection at the Georges Pompidou Centre.

During the fifties, Matégot designed a series of ( small ) metal furniture and household products for Dutch company Artimeta. Only produced during the fifties, this rare metal tea trolley is ‘Matégot-signed’ all over. It has three levels with two removable trays in attractive colour combination yellow and red. This very charming product design really captured the spirit of fifties modernism very well. This is a genuin Matégot design, I have it documented in the original Artimeta Catalogue of the same time period ( pictures and information can be shown for inspection ).
