Gijs Bakker ( Amersfoort, 1942 ) was trained as an industrial designer, his works cover home accessoires, furniture and jewellery. In the early 90ies he co-founded ‘Droog’, a conceptual Dutch design company located in Amsterdam and works with independent designers to design and realize products and exhibitions which presents a selection of postmodern designs made of a combination of industrial materials and ready made objects. The foundations name has his origin in the simplicity and ‘dry humor’ of the ad hoc way some the objects are made. The work of Gijs Bakker is represented in museum collections all over the world.
This original and rare “Umbrella lamp”, produced by Artimeta in 1973, is an early example and captures the spirit the work of Gijs Bakker very well; in fact it is just a direct copy of an umbrella ( it even can be fold up ), but adapted to be a floor light.
Artificial silk still undamaged ( ! ) and chrome plated frame all in good condition.
