At the beginning of the 20th century a new rationality began in furniture design, stimulated by the new philosophies that emerged from the Bauhaus School. Together with the use of ‘new’ materials and innovative production methods the modern 1920ies furniture designs evolved in such a way that they could be mass produced and therefore make good design more accessible to the masses.
The Dutch Gispen furniture company was founded in 1916 by industrial designer Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890-1981) and mainly produced steel ( tubular ) furniture for home and office. Until the 1960ies of the 20th century the company worked with several famous Dutch designers such as Gerrit Rietveld, Wim Rietveld, Andre Cordemeyer and Christoffel Hoffmann. Hoffmann worked closely with Willem Gispen and did most of the company’s technical drawings.
Like all Gispen furniture designs this beautiful large steel table by Hoffmann is very well-constructed and carefully finished. Thanks to its weight the top is very stable and offers a comfortable place to work or sit at, and offers space for 6 or 8 chairs. Though it is a 1930ies design, it matches great with many fifties designs ( like Friso Kramer or Wim Rietveld ).
Good condition, usermarks consistent with age.
