Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass ( 1917 – 2007) began working as a consultant for Olivetti, designing equipment and furniture in the fifties and sixties and particularly known for the iconic red Valentine typewriter. Sottsass made his name as a designer who, through colour, form and styling, managed to bring office equipment into the realm of popular culture. Later he became a leading member of the Memphis movement, who’s colorful, ironic pieces were hailed as one of the most characteristic examples of Post-modernism in design.
Sottsass worked for a number of companies such as Alessi, Knoll and Artemide, and his body of designs included furniture, jewelry, glass, lighting and office machine design.
This particular floor light he designed for the German Erco Lighting, a progressive company specialized in architectural lighting.
At the days this light came in a small range of shapes and sizes, this is the biggest and most attractive one with the concealed castors in the base.
The postmodern black and white painted elements suggests it is made entirely of plastic, but in fact just some small parts are. The base and the arms are made of metal, which makes it a heavy and steady floor light. So the base hides 4 castors for easy moving, the arm can be adjusted, as well as the pivoting shade. Embossed mark with manufactorer and designer.
This light is hardly being offered, so a great opportunity here to purchase a very rare Sottsass item which will be a centerpiece for your home or office.
